sex changeA change in a person’s sexual characteristics, usually by means of surgical operation and hormone treatment. The law does not recognize the validity of such changes. Sex is determined at birth and cannot be legally changed, for example, to enable marriage to take place with a person of the opposite sex to that assumed after the sex change. It may be, however, that this rule contravenes the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights. |
